Learn to drive in Perth. To ensure you’re a safe and confident driver once you drive solo, the Western Australian Department of Transport uses a Graduated Driver Training and Licensing (GDTL) process.
The six steps of getting your first driver’s licence are:
Get a learner’s permit
You need to pass a theory test to get your learner’s permit and start driving. First, please download the Handbook with everything you need to know about the road rules. If you fail the theory, you will have to wait 24 hours before sitting the test again.
The cost to get your permit is $109.00 and is payable when you pass the theory test. You can set your theroy test at a licensing centre.
Your learner’s permit is valid for three years. You may need to get a medical certificate from your doctor depending on if you have a medical condition prior to learning to drive.
Learn to drive/ride
Find an instructor and Book an driving lesson or two with Apex Driving School. Learn to drive with pricing start at $60 per lesson.
Complete the Hazard Perception Test
The HPT is a Computerised Theory Test (CTT) that you need to do at a licensing centre. The HPT test is done on a computer simulator taking you through some real life scenarios.
If you pass your HPT, you will be required to complete a minimum 50 hours of driving and logging it with an App or a log book. YOU MUST also complete 5 hours of night time driving.
Continue to gain experience
Continue to learn to drive with your instructor and gain your confidence on our roads.
Pass the Practical Driving Assessment
Your instructor will only advise you once they feel that you are confident at going for your license. Remember, we have the best interests in you therefore, we will not rush you into your practical driving assessment.
It is advisable to sit the assessment in the car you have learnt in. If you have learned to drive in one of our cars and wanting to take your assessment, please ensure you book your vehicle for the 2 hours with us after you made your appointment Practical Driving Assessment with the Department of Transport.
Get a provisional licence (P plates)
To get your provisional licence you must:
- Have passed the Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).
- Have your photo taken
Have paid the fee for your provisional licence. - Abide by the rules for novice drivers
This process can vary depending on your age and driving experience.
